While I spend a whole lot less time fishing for Halibut than Chinook salmon, it has to be mentioned. Techniques over the years have improved the catch rate even as the biomass of halibut in North America is at an all time low though considered stable.
Out of all the places on the coast Ucluelet is not considered the top, but that doesn’t mean you won’t catch a decent amount halibut when you go out. Early in the season the halibut tend to be closer to shore. We in Ucluelet are quite lucky.
Take Homer Alaska which is famous for its halibut fishing. There are many charter boats heading out there every day.
In fact you can easily find a “six pack” boat as a single to head out and catch your limit. Yes the fishing is good. But charter boats there have to run a minimum of an hour to find productive fishing grounds. And you may be running 1.5 to 2 hours.
If you take into consideration all the time spent running to get to your halibut, Ucluelet doesn’t look so bad. We can head out for 30 minutes and have the limits within the time it takes to just make the run somewhere else.
And we get some pretty good bites here too. We also have the advantage of fishing Big Bank where we often can load up on Chinook, Coho and Halibut all in the same general area.
So how was fishing in 2022 for halibut?
As a fisherman we always judge the amount of halibut coming back on the dock. I would say it was a decent year but I have to admit our fishing methods and knowledge of areas keep improving so that one is a bit tough to answer.
Let's just say on any given day from May to September in 2022 you could go out and catch your limit. And the halibut started early in May and got better as the summer went on. So overall we were very pleased with the halibut catches.
